ENVIRONMENTAL CITIZENSHIP:  A REPORT ON EMERGING PERSPECTIVES IN MALAYSIA

A national survey on “Environmental Citizenship: Emerging Perspectives in Malaysia” has been developed to identify and understand the perspectives and attitudes on the environment among Malaysians.

A national survey on “Environmental Citizenship: Emerging Perspectives in Malaysia” has been developed to identify and understand:

• the level of environmental knowledge among Malaysians

• the level of environmental attitude of Malaysians

• the level of responsible behaviour of Malaysians towards the environment

• the level of individual ownership towards the environment

• current implementation of Environmental Education (EE) within the National Education system

• current processes in EE within the National Education system

• the processes that ensure EE can be included formally (for e.g., in schools, within the curriculum and also in co-curriculum), informally (for e.g., among resident associations, environmental clubs, community groups, etc) and also in educational activities.

This survey will assess more than 12,000 respondents throughout the whole of Malaysia from among:

• sdasda

• schoolchildren

• parents and the general public

• teachers and teacher trainers

• university lecturers

• university students

• teacher trainees

• business, industry and media representatives

• politicians, government officers and members of NGOs

WWF-Malaysia has also initiated a network of Environmental Educators in Peninsular Malaysia, bringing together some of the most active NGOs in EE - Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM), Global Environment Centre (GEC), Wetlands International, Sustainable Development Network (SUSDEN), and Environmental Protection Society Malaysia (EPSM). Through a one-day workshop, the network developed their vision: “Partnerships in Education for the Environment”, and set up 3 working groups - the Secretariat, Capacity Building and Resource Materials.
